The Queen's Chamber Band plays Bach!
Johann Sebastian Bach's 323rd Birthday coincides with Good Friday , so our annual celebration comes a little late this year. Organist/conductor Claudia Dumschat leads her Transfiguration Choir of Men & Boys, the Camerata, The Queen's Chamber Band and soloists in Bach's cantata , Liebster Gott, wann werd' ich sterben?(BWV 8). Countertenor Marshall Coid takes a solo turn with two selections from the notebook compiled by Bach's second wife Anna Magdalena. Violinist Robert Zubrycki and 'cellist Peter Seidenberg join harpsichordist Elaine Comparone for the Sonata in F minor for Violin and Obbligato Harpsichord (BWV 1018). The versatile Dr. Dumschat turns to the magnificent Arnold Schwartz Memorial Organ for a performance of the Passacaglia & Thema Fugatum in C minor (BWV 581). Elaine Comparone plays The Concerto in the Italian Style (BWV 971) on her Frank Hubbard Franco-Flemish harpsichord. Finally, The Queen's Chamber Band assembles for a performance of the rarely played Concerto in F Major for Harpsichord, Winds & Strings (BWV 1057), Bach's own alternate version of his Fourth Brandenburg Concerto in G Major. In the latter work, Bach assigns the florid solo part to a violin while in the F Major version, the harpsichord emerges as soloist.
